Coffee and Donuts were available.

Meeting began at 9 am.

Treasurer’s report and Minutes from previous month not avaiable

Discussion:

1.       Craig gave an update on the availability of wheelchairs at airports that the club visits.  There are wheelchairs now at Winter Haven and St. Pete (Albert Whitted). Presently, Craig has contacted the Sebring Manager and it is their intention to obtain a chair.  Thank you, Sebring!

2.      The members present thought it would be a good idea to have the Club contact the Airport Managers in our area requesting that a wheelchair be made available as an accommodation for the pilots, their passengers and other members of the public who frequent their airports.  Craig will do so.

3.       Jay talked about Harmonic Engine Tuning.  This technology can diagnose engine problems before they occur.  He had it done to his Lycoming when it was rebuilt.  See Jay for more details.

4.      Jay did a demo of LED lights for the cockpit and landing/identification purposes.  A new company, SUPERBRIGHTLEDS.COM, is producing high quality at very reasonable prices.  He is going to use in his new RV.  Craig is going to add a landing/id light to his S-12.

5.      Our EAA Chapter will update EAA national with our new website,

www.southlakelandx49ers.com

6.      NEXT FLY OUT: SEBRING MUNICIPAL (SEF); SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 11

Meeting

Minutes of May meeting sent via email.

Treasurers report from Terri, May bank statement, $360.66

Jay discussed the rebuild of his Lycomming 300 that had 800 hours.

Chuck discussed that a benefactor has provided a Challenger II for his missionary program, Change of Life, a 501.c3 non-profit corp., to be used for giving flying experience for troubled youth.  Also, other youth will have the opportunity for the same opportunity.

Jack Parker talked about his flight in his Rans S-12 to Albert Whitted, Ruskin, a fly over of Terra Verde and of an island, Egg Mont…and…he showed the pix to prove it.  Jack also showed pix from the Club trip to Sebring.

Jack Parker also presented great details on how he keeps a written report, self-generated, each year for his Annual.  Thanks for the info, Jack.

Hopefully, the pix taken by Terri of the Sebring trip will go on the Club web site, www.southlakelandx49ers, as soon as I figure it out.

EAA CHAPTER 149

MINUTES  May 29, 2010

MEMBERS PRESENT:  Larry Meadows, Chuck Raymond, Chris Case, Billy Henderson, Jack Parker, Dave Kotik, Larry McFarland, Craig and Joan McGarvey, Jay and Terri Kurtz

GUESTS:  Albertu Eeltink, Robert Van Wagnew

BREAKFAST was served and a large thank you to Chris Case and Joan and Craig McGarvey.

Jay opened the meeting.

1.       Secretary’s report of April’s meeting was sent to all members via email.

2.       No Treasurer’s report this month.

3.      Discussion about Jay’s new project, RV 9 LSA.

4.      Discussion about the incident at Sebring last week and the death of pilot, Doug Gardner.

Chuck Raymond offered a prayer in remembrance of Doug and for his family.

FAA is investigating.  It appears that Doug (RV 8) and a twin engine plane came close about 1 ˝ miles out on approach for landing.  There was speculation/discussion that Doug may have encountered a high speed accelerated stall trying to avoid the other aircraft.  Again, this was discussion only.

This is a reminder to all pilots to be vigilant searching for other aircraft and use and listen to  the radio many miles identifying yourself and location out whenever approaching an airport.

5.       The Fly-Out to Sebring in April was reviewed again and we hope to get the pictures up on the website, www.southlakelandx49ers.com.

PILOT COORDINATION WAS LACKING.  PILOTS WERE SCATTERED AND ON DIFFERENT FREQUENCIES.  PRE-FLIGHT BRIEFING WILL BE DONE FOR NEXT FLY OUT.

6.      The next Fly-Out is scheduled for June 12th for breakfast at Winter Haven airport.  More information coming.

7.      Next monthly BREAKFAST meeting will be Saturday June 26th.

8.      Meeting adjourned.

Meeting Minutes  4/24/10

EAA Chapter 149   South Lakeland Airport

MEMBERS PRESENT:  Richard Hardy, Larry McFarland, Rich Murray, Jack Morrissey, Bart Verellen, Chris Tosti, Chris Case, Debbie Case, Jack Parker, Eric Adams, Randy Wildman, Billy Henderson,  Dale Walter(guest), Craig McGarvey, Joan McGarvey, Jay Kurtz, Terri Kurtz.  Welcome to new members, Chuck Raymond and Joe Gambone, Jim Pushar.

A great breakfast was served at 9 am (coffee, bacon, eggs, sausage/gravy and biscuit enjoyed by all and the meeting began about 10 am.  Thank you Bart, Chris and Debbie, Chris T and Craig and Joan.  Volunteers are always needed.

MEETING

Treasurer’s Report:  Randy reported, as of 3/31/10, $437.48 in the bank.  Report accepted

Secretary’s Report:  Craig read the minutes of 3/27/10.  Minutes accepted.

1.       Fly Out.  The Club voted to have the next fly out on Saturday May 15th, leave X49 at 10:30 am destination Sebring for lunch.

2.      Presentation (DVD) of Dave Kotic’s new product on the market, in flight camera system.  It is capable of 4 or 8 hr operation, HD or regular, 1080p, can be switched back and forth.  Cost to Club members is $649 complete.  Many were sold at SNF.

3.      Class D airspace discussion.  Eric Adams presented the procedure for using D space and talking with the tower. Tips:

a.       Always check chart and get Atis for information before calling tower

b.      Call tower on it’s frequency, wait for reply, do not enter airspace until reply received

c.       State plane N number, type, location, altitude, if no transponder tell tower and then intention upon landing

d.      Follow tower directions

e.       Ask for repeat if not understood or repeat back the instructions

f.       If tower has ground frequency, ask for progressive taxi

g.      Remember, must have D space log book endorsement

h.      Have all your required papers in case of a ramp check

4.      Jay K said he would set up a visit to the Lakeland tower perhaps for the May meeting and planes could be flown to KLAL.

5.      Zephyrhills airport.  Jay K issued a cautionary statement to be very aware when using this uncontrolled airport due to the high activity and different uses.

6.      Craig discussed the educational program he presented at SNF Paradise City tent for the school children, 300 students mostly middle and high school, introducing them to Light Sport Aircraft.  The feedback was excellent and the students and other groups well behaved.  However, the ability to see the presentation was challenged.  Craig presented to our Chapter the need to bring 21st century equipment into the tent for the presentations and retire the projector and 16mm screen that most students had probably never seen.  We need to upgrade to two 30” LCD’s two stands and a sound system.  This equipment would be owned and retained by Ch 149 and available for use for school presentations and pilot briefings each day during SNF.  Club members were interested in pursuing filling this need in order to really capture the interest of young people becoming pilots.

7.      Billy Henderson was recognized and thanked for his initiative in founding SNF in 1971.  Thank you Billy.  Your legacy lives on!

8.      Terri K presented hats with our new Chapter Patch to the volunteers who worked each day at X49 during SNF.

9.      Chris Case has Club patches.  Come to a meeting and buy a patch for your hat, shirt or jacket.  They are beautiful.

10.  Jack Parker brought his Rans S-12 and we inspected it to see if we could find the problem that would cause him to fail an “annual” and have a guaranteed flight emergency.  It was something very simple and can happen easily.  No one found it.  Answer:  the right gas tank fill cap had the vent tube turned to the rear.  It must face forward to work properly and feed the gas.

11.  SNF Awards.  We had two members receive awards for their planes. Richard Hardy received Grand Champion, Custom Vintage, for his Aeronca 7A Champ AND Eric Adams and Randy Wildman received Best Materials Kit LSA Award for the Fisher 202.  CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

12.  Meeting adjourned.

13.  NEXT MONTHLY MEETING SATURDAY MAY 29.  SEE YOU.
